June 22, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): American actor Val Kilmer is now facing protests from his neighbors on his plan to turn his 6000 acre Santa Fe ranch into a bed-and-breakfast.
The actor, who was seen in films like Batman Forever, Tombstone and the recent MacGruber, has recently applied for permission to run a bed-and-breakfast project.
His neighbors not worried about the traffic and noise that will result. They are also not bothered about the obtrusive tourists. The neighbors are just angry at the actor for his defamatory comments against them in his interviews of 2003 and 2005.
It seems that the neighbors of Val Kilmer did not want him to get his way so easily with the farm plans. They just want him to apologize for the comments.
According to his neighbor Jose Garcia, who runs horses on a 50-acre farm near the actor’s place, “He is just required to come here and apologize. We’re not scared of him.”
About those comments, Kilmer said that he was misquoted. In an interview, he said, “My area in New Mexico is the homicide capital of the Southwest and 80% of the people here are drunk.”
It is reported that half a dozen of the local people demanded an apology from the 50 year old actor before permitting him to start the bed-and-breakfast. The county attorney, Jesus Lopez reportedly supported his neighbors on this.
Again in 2005, the actor had said that he knew how to act like a Vietnam veteran and he can do it better than someone who had actually fought in the war. He also added that the soldiers were borderline criminal or poor wretched kids and they were in military only because they get beaten by their fathers.
On the other hand, the local commission assured that the case will be examined based on the merit, keeping aside the controversies.
On his part Kilmer stated that he had tried to be a very good neighbor by supporting local schools and wildlife preservations.
