LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — After four seasons, NBC Universal on Friday decided to cancel the once popular television series “Heroes.” Television insiders had long speculated that “Heroes” would not get a renewal due to poor ratings during the fourth season. Rumors of a half-season pickup for a limited number of episodes have turned out not to be true.

The television science fiction drama “Heroes” was created by Executive Producer Tim Kring and premiered in 2006. The series followed a group of ordinary humans who received extra-ordinary abilities. It starred Hayden Panettiere as “The Cheerleader” and Zachary Quinto as the sinister “Sylar.”

The first season of “Heroes” was considered a ratings success for NBC. It provided great counter-programming against popular Fox series “24″ and “Prison Break” and later on “House.”

Throughout its television lifespan, “Heroes” earned numerous awards and nominations. In 2007, “Heroes” won the People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama.

Originally presented as having the storytelling similar to a comic book, “Heroes” spawned several award winning webisode spinoffs and graphic novels.

The fourth season of “Heroes” concluded in February.
