Nov 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Mary Winkler, the woman who served time in prison for killing her husband in 2006 appeared in the NBC Dateline episode ‘The Preacher’s Wife’ on November 5. The much talked about episode has been a rage on the web ever since it aired as people have given a mixed response to the show and some have also blogged that the woman does not deserve to go scot-free after murdering her preacher husband.
On the show, Mary Winkler revealed the darker side of her husband and said that she was a victim of severe physical and mental abuse over the years. Mary Winkler was released less than a year after being convicted for the voluntary manslaughter of her husband and she had also gained custody of her three daughters soon afterwards. Mary Winkler said that she felt that she got justice in the case that might appear to be rather bizarrely unjust to some. She also spoke about her fears of not seeing her daughters again after the case and said that she was relieved to find that her daughters believed her. She explained that her husband’s family was understanding as well and took care of her daughters at the time of her absence.
Mary Winkler said on ‘Dateline’ that she faced years of sexual abuse from her husband who she claimed raped and abused her for years till she decided to take action. The 36 year old, who was 32 at the time, shot her preacher husband at the back while he was asleep. After she was found by the police, she admitted to the crime and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter.
