Musical Legend Lena Horne Passes Away At 92

lenoNew York, May 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Much acclaimed American singer and actress Lena Horne passed away on Saturday, sending shock waves across the entertainment circle and among her large number of fans. The singing legend whose silky voice had been successful in enthralling audiences across generations, was 92 years old when she breathed her last at New York City’s New YorkPresbyterian Hospital. Although a spokesperson of the medical facility revealed the news of Lena Horne’s demise to news sources, the circumstances which led to the celebrated musical artist and singer’s death has not been available.

Lena Horne, who began her career at the young age of 16 is known to have made her mark in different sectors of the entertainment industry which includes movies, television, radio, nightclubs, concert halls as well as Broadway. Lena Horne rose to fame by becoming one of the first black musical artist to perform at the well-known Copacabana nightclub in the 1940’s and it marked the beginning of an illustrious career that spanned across six decades. The noted singer earned recognition in the world of jazz with her mesmerizing rendition of the “Stormy Weather” which is still considered to be one of her best works.

Lena Horne, who is also known for her association with the Civil Rights Movement, earned fame as Hollywood’s first sex symbol who was able to break free from the stereotypes of African Americans on screen with her iconic body of work. Popularly known as ‘Negro Cinderella’ during the earlier part of her career, the celebrated actress had a reputation of being as complex in her personal life as she was beautiful.
