Movie Review : BLUE (2009)

BLUE: A BIG dissappointment
Rating: 1.5 out of 5*
Starring: Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Lara Dutta, Zayed Khan, Rahul Dev and Katrina Kaif (Sp. App)
Director: Anthony D’Souza
Sagar (Dutt) and Aarav (Akshay) are good friends settled in the Bahamas. While Sam is a happy go lucky rich businessman, Sagar is down to earth and not as ambitious as him. Aarav on many occasions tries to instigate Sagar on coming out with the secret of “The Lady In Blue’ a ship carrying a huge gold treasure that was sunk in 1949 in the Bahamas seas. Aarav believes Sagar knows the route to the deep sunken ship and they both can benefit from the huge treasure that lies inside it. Sagar however doesn’t like to discuss about the ship nor has any interest for the treasure hunt. Just then Sagar’s younger brother Sam (Zayed) arrives from Bangkok after five years. Mafia boss Gulshan (Rahul) is hot on his trail for an assignment worth 50 million dollars gone wrong. With Gulshan too arriving in Bahamas and kidnapping his girlfriend Mona (Lara), Sagar has only 24 hours left for paying back the huge money which Sam has messed with. He is now left with no option but face his old demons and plunge into the deep sea with Aarav and Sam for the treasure hunt.
A really interesting premise shot beautifully but messed big time by unimaginative writing and lackluster direction is what Blue shall always be remembered as. The setting is different no doubt, but where are the requisite twists and turns and pace which are a must for this genre of films? The so called major twist that comes out in the end can be guessed quiet earlier in the first half itself. Also, almost the entire first half moves around with zero grip on the audience with more than enough time wasted on character establishment. The much hyped shark sequences are a big let down what with barring the opening sequence of few minutes (where believe it or not Akshay and Dutt literally ride a shark) there is not a single scene where the sharks are a threat and get you on the edge of your seat. The bike chase sequences have been shot very well though. The underwater sequences have been superbly lit up and one needs to salute the team of cameramen involved for it. The climax is extremely “thanda’ and derives unintentional laughter as well. Songs don’t really fit in well and the Kylie Minogue starring Chiggy Wiggy number doesn’t really work on screen. However, the background music and sound editing is excellent.
Akshay is in his element in here playing the flirty cool dude with a hidden agenda with amazing natural ease. Dutt approaches his part with zero enthusiasm and worse, his paunch is visible in many sequences. But Zayed is good and Rahul Dev impresses too. Lara Dutta is super hot and does ample skin show. Katrina Kaif in a special appearance doesn’t work at all.
Said to be over Rs. 100 crore in budget, Blue doesn’t justify the mega budget it has been allotted and first timer director Anthony D’Souza gets it all wrong mistaking style and extra coolness quotient for substance.
If you want to experience some good underwater photography on a big screen and a few well shot action sequences, then you can go for it but if you are expecting something more then let us warn you that you will be in for a BIG disappointment!

I must say the author of this article is too biased and doesn’t like an actor / actress in the movie, so he/she is giving negative comments to the movie. I am also sure that the person who wrote this article hasn’t even seen the movie. I went to watch the movie tonight and the movie is amazing. I don’t know why people didn’t find a story in the movie. Well, I would say that a person’s brain needs to have atleast one square milimeter of area which does logical thinking, if he/she wants to enjoy this movie. “All the best” to that person who doesn’t have that portion in his brain. He definitely will like mindless things because it gives him / her immense pleasure to get enlightened by the fact that there are some people in this world who are like him or her.
5/5 for this movie.
Great stunts / Great Thrills / Great Music and ofcourse Great Story … AND above all… Great Ending.

My rating- 1/5 Watching blue is like drinking coke without the sizzle. If u want to watch the movie, just see the last 1/2 hour. nothing really happens in the movie. The concept of underwater shooting is good but it needed a strong story line, screenplay and direction. The “over-confident” dialogues doesnt fit in the movie well. Akshay can’t act. Sanjay would have looked better as zayed’s father rather than his brother. the movie promos were so good and thrilling but when u go and watch the movie, there is zero thrill. They show threatens from the sharks in the promos, but there is nothing as such. Overall the movie s very bad. I wonder how they spent 100 cr. They should have shot in andaman or lakshadeep to save money

I am sorry for offence I have caused to the intellect of everyone who watched my debut film.
Yes even those remtards who actually thought that a film with a lacklustre script and inexperienced director at its helm would actually be any good.
I simply wanted to make some money… and to all you mindless automatons, who are slaves to corporate machines dishing out this crap like a shithouse…
THANK YOU.
Thank you for again proving that for as long as there are intellectually, remedial masses (YOU) watching drivel like this…
THEN THE MORE MONEY I MAKE and KEEP… THE MORE YOU PAY and LOSE.
You may have guessed by now that I am not really “Tony” D’Souza, but someone who can look past this frankly dismal attempt of filmmaking, and see it for what it really is…
A DRUG.
A drug to feed the sadly simple and feeble-minded audiences of mass consumerism.
It is a shame that an industry that movies like ‘Zanjir’,’ Sholay’, ‘Aradhana’ and ‘Qurbani’ could once have symbolised the excellence which was present in a Bollywood - now have this pathetic ditch-water to offer.
Now I’m sure that those poor f***tards like ‘Raihan’ have commented above PRAISING this shit-stain on cinema would disagree with what I have said and what this FRANKLY FACTUAL review states…
But then again, they are junkies, hooked on mass-media … and I don’t know about you… but I would never believe a word a junkie says standing outside a crack den…so why would you believe anything these fools say as long as they get their fix of mind-numbing, arse-juice, pumped out by the Bollywood Corporate Machine????
And while I am talking about ‘Raihan’…
” Some f****** reveiw given by some sites… this guys dont know how a film was blue…. this films rocks…. idoit review writters sucks big time.they dont know wht is a adventurous and action movie means.to them only f****** nonsensical comedy movies goes superb hit…. assholic review writter of some sites sucks big time.i wasted my time on reading review.stupid review….o yeah? did u understand wht a movie means? f***** comedy cunts….. you r a garbage to this world…. ppl these guys dnt watch films with meaningful mind… crapping comedians..Really u comedians? do u watch these type films?do you have dat much brain to undrstand?huh you comedians sucks big time…. blue rocks….,,”
“this guys dont know how a film was blue”
- I think you are trying to say here that some “guys” did not know a film (is or was) pornographic??
“idoit review writters sucks big time.they dont know wht is a adventurous and action movie means.to them only f****** nonsensical comedy movies goes superb hit…”
- And I’m sure Akshay Kumar has NEVER made any “f****** nonsensical comedy movies”?? Wait a sec… that is exactly how he marketed himself as until a publicist told him that the only way to make any money is to do what every male commodity does in the industry….lift some weights, shave your chest and armpits and a turn into super-media-whore…man. YAY!
“they dont know wht is a adventurous and action movie means…do u watch these type films? do you have dat much brain to undrstand?huh you comedians sucks big time…. blue rocks…”
- So you are trying to tell me that Action films are meant to be…what?.. Thought provoking? …Intellectual? ..Artistic?…NO. they are made purely to satisfy the slow minded fools who need to see bikini clad women or a metro sexual monsters racing around in cars/boat/bikes, shooting guns and lording it out in clubs with (laughs) Kylie Minogue.
“do u watch these type films? do you have dat much brain to undrstand?”
- With the intellect needed to comprehend “these type films”…You must be extremely proud that you have the ability to breathe in and out.
I’ll tell you what “a adventurous and action movie means.” - Action films are dismissed any student of film as devoid of narrative and substance hence what’s usually highlighted are the actions that further obscure the morals and lessons they want to convey. it would take a very sophisticated and sensitive viewer to detect what the actions are all about. For example… the cocky Dickshay Kumar declaring “I never break the law” while Drink-Driving… hmmm great moral lesson there!

Well said.
And as for Anthony “Tony” D’Souza….I wonder who he sucked off to get that job… oh yea he said himself that “It was thanks to John Abraham, who I had literally hounded almost for three years from the time he had made his debut with Jism, who put me in touch with producer Dhilin Mehta of Shri Ashtavinayak Films”.
I. KNEW. HE. WAS. GAY.
In the end, it all boils to this…. BLUE is by far one of strongest nominees for Most Shite Film of 2009… and if nothing is released in the next few weeks… it will probably win and the kindest thing one can say for him and screenwriter Bryan Sullivan; is that they bought a flatpack IKEA version of a thriller and then couldn’t follow the instructions.
Manuals can be confusing.

BTW in this interview D’Souza says he wants “…to make films which kids of five would see, laugh and jump”
WELL DONE F***FACE!!!
