Film: The Dilemma

After 1999 with EDtv dunking in the box-office, Ron Howard moved away from the comedy genre and went on to make films that were good Oscar baits. But with The Dilemma, the man behind the Oscar winning film A Beautiful Mind is back trying his hands in the comic film again. Vaughan goes to play the character Ronny and over the years he has become a bankable star delivering the appealing motor-mouth act.

Ronny a commitment phobic character whose relationship with Beth (Jennifer Connelly) fails to get established along with the reason why Beth is still stuck with Ronny. On the other hand Nick (Kevin James) and Ronny’s emotional attachment too doesn’t come to the screen apart from the fact that they do the regular buddy stuff, while Ronny is worried Nick is being cheated by his wife Geneva (Winona Ryder).

There are few stances where it gives the comedy that the audience paid its money for. But it fails to address the important question that what should one’s best friend do when he finds out that friend’s wife is cheating on him? Howard and producer partner Brain Grazer started the film with this question, but fails to deliver.

Even though Winona Ryder’s character is difficult to be described as a wacko or just a woman who cheats on her husband, she is able to deliver few scenes that are best in the film that has her some heated arguments with Vaughan. James fails miserably while Vaughan tries his best to uplift the film with his energy.  The film is releasing in USA on January 14, 2011 and by the preview it seems that The Dilemma is going to pose a dilemma for Ron Howard.
