Moore steps up campaign against sex trafficking
May 5th, 2010 - 9:31 pm ICT by IANSLondon, May 5 (IANS) Actress Demi Moore has stepped up her campaign against child sex trafficking. She met lawmakers at the White House to discuss the issue.
The actress launched The Demi and Ashton (DNA) Foundation with her husband Ashton Kutcher to raise awareness about the harrowing subject and to help survivors of abuse.
Moore Tuesday held a news conference at Capitol Hill in Washington, calling for harsh punishments for offenders as well as more leniency and support to youngsters coerced into prostitution.
“I think many Americans are more willing to accept that girls are being trafficked in Cambodia and can’t imagine it’s happening right here… It’s more profitable and less risky to sell a girl than drugs. Demand for prostitution fuels sex trafficking. And I think clearly our system isn’t working,” contactmusic.com quoted her as saying.
Following her talk at Capitol Hill, Moore then visited the White House along with three female sex abuse victims to discuss human trafficking with White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett.
“Appreciated the opportunity to participate today in a Congressional briefing to end Child Sex Slavery in America,” Moore tweeted on her microblogging page after the meeting.
