Today, on the 23rd of August, 2009, the world will be observing the most beautiful day of the whole year as the preparations get put together to host the Miss Universe 2009 event. This year’s event is going to make it the 58th pageant and is being held at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau, Bahamas. At the end of the event, the most beautiful woman in the world is going to be crowned and walk away with the title. For a stretch of a year, till the next year’s pageant, the winner will be known to be the most beautiful woman.

At the end of this year’s event, Miss Universe 2008, Dayana Mendoza of Venezuela will be present to pass on the crown to her successor. As many as 83 nations and territories are known to be participating in this year’s beauty pageant, in hope of clinching for the title. The event will be broadcast live on the NBC Telemundo networks.

A recent update from the Miss Universe camp, as late as just fifteen hours before the main event, seems to suggest that Miss Turks & Caicos Jewel Selver has pulled away from the pageant citing health constraints. She is said to have returned to her homeland on Saturday, August 22. According to sources, she was suffering from dehydration and left in order to recover. This is the first time in many years that any contestant has dropped out of the Miss Universe event while being so close to the finale.

This is also the first time that the preliminary rounds of the contest has been available for public viewing by streaming it online.
