The audience at the Teen Choice Awards on Sunday night was in for a shock as Miley Cyrus took to the stage to perform on her song “Party in the USA”. First of all the 16 year old star did not look her age at all in the tight fitted skimpy attire and leather boots. It almost seemed that she was trying hard to make a statement. Moreover, other surprises were also waiting to be unleashed on the fans gathered there. While performing to her song, Miley went on top of an ice cream cart which had a pole attached and started, well hold your breaths, pole dancing.

Not that people have suddenly become prudish or conservative, but this was not expected from a 16 year old! Specially the fact that Cyrus is almost entirely famous for her portrayal of Hannah Montana in Disney’s hugely popular series by the same name, where she plays a cute and much innocent character who is part of a equally nice family environment. This show is hugely popular with young kids and teenagers, who consider Cyrus as some kind of idol and try and ape her lifestyle. Critics of this ‘pole dance’ performance by Cyrus have been forthcoming with their views on the fact that being a teen idol she has not done the right thing by indulging in ‘that kind’ of a performance which is being deemed ‘improper’.

Some sections of the media have already started talking about the fact that the way Miley Cyrus seems to be moving with her lifestyle and other antics, days are not far, when she would be termed the next Britney Spears, who incidentally is another teen idol and quite infamous for her conduct and the ensuing controversies.
