June 27, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The veteran film director Mike Nichols was awarded the prestigious 38th American Film Institute Life Achievement Award and the world saw it last night on TV Land. It was a star studded event where Hollywood celebrities like Dustin Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks, Cher Williams, Robin Williams and other stars were present to honor the Oscar winning director. The evening saw all the high profile celebrities praising Mike Nichols and the director was moved by the honor he received for his work.
The 78 years old director has presented Hollywood many of its classic films like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?”, “The Graduate”, “Carnal Knowledge”, “Working Girl” and “The Birdcage”. Mike Nichols has won many awards before including Grammy Award, Emmy Award, and Tony Award for his various contributions in film, television and theater. Mike Nichols was awarded National Medal of Arts in the year 2001. He is recognized for his innovative skills as a director for television, stage and films and also as a writer and producer. In the AFI award ceremony which was held earlier this month, Simon and Garfunkel who were the musicians for the remarkable soundtrack to his Academy award-winning movie “The Graduate” performed in honor of Mike Nicholas and Elaine May did a wonderful comedy routine solo which was appreciated by all.
The American Film Institute Life Achievement Award has added another feather to Mike Nichols’ wing. Apart from that, on Thursday a reputed media source has revealed that Mike Nichols may direct “Great Hope Springs”, written by TV writer Vanessa Taylor. The movie is likely to have Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges as the protagonists who come together as a couple, unsure about their 30 years of marriage. If Mike Nichols directs the movie then it is going to be 78 years old director’s first collaboration with Jeff Bridges.
