Michael Sheen would never become a star if he entered films today
May 20th, 2009 - 2:17 pm ICT by ANILondon, May 20 (ANI): Michael Sheen has said that he would never make it big in Hollywood if he started his acting career today, as there’s a dearth of funding for drama schools and schemes-his entry door to stardom.
The ‘Frost/Nixon’ actor made the comments while speaking to a group of Rhondda Valley schoolchildren who were part of Filmclub, an initiative that gives youngsters access to classic film titles.
“I am very saddened that the way I came up and the reason I got into acting has now gone. If I were the age now that I was when I first got into theatre I simply would not be an actor because the route I took does not exist any more. There is one reason for that: funding,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying.
The acclaimed actor began his thespian career as a teenager with The West Glamorgan Youth Theatre.
However, he said: “It is not being funded as it once was and there’s no drama at my old school any more.”
The 40-year-old actor added: “Schemes such as this exist only because of the hard work of those involved and through funding. So if I can help to encourage people to put money into projects like this then I will because it is very important to me. There has definitely never been a lack of talent, it is just having the platform for it to flourish. I know I’m very fortunate to be able to make my living out of my passion for acting and films.” (ANI)
