Millions of viewer rushed to the internet in order to catch a glimpse of Michael Jackson’s Memorial live coverage, thus slowing down the net connection all over.
A huge online audience, in order to catch the grand event which was termed as “the biggest media event ever”, clung on to their PC’s from their work place where television facilities are not available. Most of them streamed the event live, thus causing a mass internet clogging which in turn slowed down the overall performance of the net. The affect was largely felt in the U.S.
Millions of streams burdened the Internet as for major TV networks of U.S, cable news outlets and social networking sites provided the “live coverage” of the entire event which was being held at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles. Like other major news services, the online web portal of CNN, provided live video streaming of the entire event. According to the Internet data provided, the web portal drew as many as 7,81,000 concurrent streams at its peak. Another web portal, MSNBC.com drew 5,10,000 concurrent streams at its peak.
While comments on the grand memorial event of the late pop icon, Michael Jackson, continued to dominate Twitter, Face book users posted 8,00,000 status updates on the event. Face book, predominantly a social networking site, which teamed up with ABC news, CNN, E online and MTV to offer live streams, said that its Michael Jackson page hit nearly 7 million fans, possibly making it the largest following of any one on the web.
Digital technology provided 47 movie theaters in 24 states in order to present the live coverage for the local audiences. The mass internet clogging had caused hassles for many internet users, as most of the sites were slowed down.
