michael-c-hall September 21, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Michael C. Hall was diagnosed with the deadly Hodgkin’s lymphoma last year when he was 38. The ‘Dexter’ star claims that he thought he wouldn’t survive past the age of 39 as his father had succumbed to prostate cancer at that age. He had been just a child then.

Hall shared his thoughts with the New York Times revealing how the age 39 had haunted him since the age of 11 when he lost his father. He said that he had always been obsessed with it thinking whether he could get past the dreaded figure of 39. He also confessed to having been bemused when he found out that he had Hodgkin’s disease. He claims to have found the coincidence interesting as well.

However, he managed to go past his 39th birthday this February with his cancer on remission. Michael C. Hall plays a sympathetic serial killer in the hit show and has disclosed that he is on chemotherapy.

To be diagnosed with such a fatal ailment just before his 39th birthday that too, when he was doing a show which dealt with death seems to be a case of strange coincidence.

He had been in his fourth season of ‘Dexter’ when he was diagnosed with cancer. He admits to having kept it a secret on the sets. He was adjudged the best actor at the Golden Globe award function and accepted the award wearing a knitted cap in order to cover his baldness, a sign that he was undergoing chemotherapy.

The effects seem to have passed now as Hall says that he feels energized once again. He looks back at his roles as his show gets ready to be aired for the fifth season on Showtime this Sunday. He feels that the characters that he gets to play like the funeral director David Fisher on ‘Six Feet Under’ and the present one of Dexter Morgan on ‘Dexter’ are repressed because he himself happens to be repressed too.
