Jimena Navarrete LAS VEGAS (BNO NEWS) — Miss Mexico, Jimena Navarrete, was crowned Miss Universe 2010 on Monday night.

Navarrete, 22, from Mexico’s second biggest city, Guadalajara in Jalisco state, is succeeding Stefania Hernandez from Venezuela and becomes the second Mexican to be crowned Miss Universe.

“Well that’s it! Thank you Mexico! My wonderful and beloved country,” Navarrete said through her Twitter account. “I am also in shock! That’s all I can say! This is for Mexico!”

Among those many thousands who congratulated Navarrete was Mexican President Felipe Calderon. “Congratulations to Jimena Navarrete for her deserved triumph as Miss Universe. It will greatly serve Mexico and its image,” he said.

Being crowned as Miss Universe usually represents a bright future in the modeling world with important contracts, but it also means Navarrete will be enjoying a monthly salary, a new apartment in New York, a scholarship to the New York Film Academy, and a number of sponsored shoes, jewelry, and beauty products.

This year’s annual international beauty contest was the 59th edition and was hosted by former Poison vocalist Bret Michaels, who recently recovered from a brain hemorrhage, and Natalie Morales, co-anchor of NBC’s Today.

Jamaica’s Yendi Philipps, 24, was first runner-up, while Australia’s Jesinta Campbell, 19, was crowned as Miss Congeniality. Miss Thailand, Fonthip Watcharatrakul, won Miss Photogenic.

Lupita Jones in 1991 became the first Mexican representative to win the beauty contest.
