Madrid, May 13 (IANS/EFE) Luis Miguel, the Mexican singer who best embodies the romantic ideal on both sides of the Atlantic, put the finishing touches on his first concert tour of Spain in five years with a show in the Spanish capital.

The mostly-female crowd at the Madrid Sports Palace greeted the artist with fluttering handkerchiefs, applause and outright hysteria.

Clad as always in a dark suit despite the sweltering temperature, Luis Miguel kicked off the concert with “Te Propongo Esta Noche” (I Suggest Tonight), “Suave” (Softly) and “Con Tus Besos” (With Your Kisses), accompanied by a 12-piece band with a solid wind section.

“Good evening, Madrid,” the singer said at the start of Friday night’s concert, and gave “thanks, thanks and more thanks” to each and every part of the palace one by one. “We end our tour here, and what a pleasure that it’s with an audience as beautiful as you are,” he said, sparking even more rejoicing around the arena.

In a concert structured in segments, the first featured his famous revved-up boleros like “Tres Palabras” (Three Words) and “La Barca” (The Boat) that had the audience singing along.

A livelier version of “Besame Mucho” (Kiss Me A Lot) closed the segment that also featured the indispensable “Somos Novios” (We’re Engaged), “No Se Tu” (I Don’t Know About You), “El Dia Que Me Quieras” (The Day You Love Me) and “Por Debajo de la Mesa” (Under the Table).

He then brought the charro segment galloping in with songs like “Que Seas Feliz” (May You Be Happy), “De Que Manera Te Olvido” (How Do I Forget You) and “La Bikina” (The Girl in the Bikini).

During the more upbeat numbers that kicked off with “Esa Nina” (That Girl) and “Un Hombre Busca a una Mujer” (A Man Seeks a Woman), he clasped the hands of his fans one after another under the watchful eye of a bodyguard who kept him from being swept away by the crowd brought to a fever pitch by “Oro de Ley” (Fine Gold), “Tu, Solo Tu” (You, Only You) and “Te Necesito” (I Need You).

The show ended with a brief encore, wild applause and yet…a certain bittersweet feeling among some in the audience who commented that despite the pleasure of seeing Luis Miguel once again, this had not been their idol’s best concert.
