Metropolitan Opera celebrates 125th anniversary

On Monday, Metropolitan, the opera house said New York’s Metropolitan Opera celebrated its 125th anniversary with a star-studded gala that netted US$6.3 million

The event occurred on Sunday and also celebrated Spanish tenor Placido Domingo’s 40-year career at the Met.

At 68, Domingo got a standing ovation when he took the stage to interpret an aria from Giacomo Puccini’s La Fanciulla del West.

The event was attended by New York’s glitterati, the gala also included performances by Russian baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flores, Natalie Dessay and Joseph Calleja, all under the direction of James Levine and his Met orchestra.

23 excerpts of classic operas were enacted, including costumes, set decorations and videos that traced Met’s history since its creation in 1883.

The Met reaped in US$6.3 million in ticket sales from the event.
