The event, which is held each year since 1972 at New York’s Avery Fisher Hall, salutes a major film-industry figure with a distinguished body of work, Variety reports.

The festival features tributes from actors, directors and other notables, a program of career highlights and a few words from the honouree.

The Film Society is known for introducing the now-popular retrospective tribute, pre-dating the American Film Institute’s Life Achievement Award by one year and the Kennedy Center Honors by four.

Streep’s latest films include “Lions for Lambs” and “Rendition.” Her upcoming projects include two Broadway-to-screen adaptations: “Proof” and “Mamma Mia!” (ANI)
