Apr 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Well, Meryl Streep has gotten yet another award, and was completely unprepared for it, it seems. The star of award winning movies such as “Sophie’s Choice” and “Julie and Julia” has recently been named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. This is a very exclusive club that includes the likes of Toni Morrison, Jasper Johns, and Stephen Sondheim. She has already received seven Golden Globes, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute, but this one made her burst into tears.

“I have to say that I was stunned, and when they sent me the roster of people in the academy I just burst into tears,” Streep said in a recent telephone interview. “I couldn’t believe that I’d be even allowed in the kitchen.”

The academy is 112 years old and members are elected for life, so the only way that a new member can join is if another member dies. Meryl Streep and conductor James Levine have both been elected into a special category which was established in 1983. According to the academy, the placement is for “Americans of great distinction in the arts whose work falls outside the traditional departments” of music (composition), literature and art.” Streep sums up her own category: “I’m in a particular subset of members that’s not even allowed to vote.”
