“Memphis” Wins Four Gongs At The 64th Annual Tony Awards

MemphisNew York, June 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 64th Annual Tony Awards saw the glory of Memphis which took home four gongs from the award ceremony held at the Radio City Music Hall. Reportedly, Memphis had been dominating the winners list all the way from the top since the Tony Awards nominations were announced.

To sum up “Memphis” was awarded the “Best Book of a Musical” gong which honors the work of Joe Di Pietro. Following that it was also awarded the “Best Original Score” along with the “Best Orchestrations”.

The Best Orchestrations prize was handed over to Daryl Waters and David Bryan. On top of that, Memphis also clinched the Best Musical award that finally made the day for “Memphis” at the Tony Awards.

Following “Memphis” was “La Cage aux Folles” and “Fela!” who were the only other musicals in the list which won multiple awards. “Fela!” brought Tony Awards for Marina Draghici as the Best Costume Design In A Musical while Robert Kaplowitz bagged the award for the Best Sound Design of a Musical.

Hollywood hero Denzel Washington who was a first time nominee at the Tony Awards was awarded the Best Actor Prize for his outstanding performance in “Fences”. “Fences” was also regarded to be the best revival drama.

Among the other prominent actors were Catherine Zeta-Jones who received the Best Actress In A Musical Award for her role in “A Little Night Music”. Million Dollar Quartet brought Best Featured Actor in a Musical Award for Levi Kreis.

Another first time nominee Scarlett Johansson emerged to be a winner for her role in the drama “A View from the Bridge”. Eddie Redmayne was awarded the Best Featured Actor Prize for his role in English drama “Red”.
