‘March to Keep Fear Alive’ to Counter ‘Rally to Restore Sanity’
September 17th, 2010 - 10:58 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonSep 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The so-called “journalists” from Comedy Central had “big announcements” to make for last night’s viewers. Jon Stewart started it, as he told the audience of his plans to hold a “Rally to Restore Sanity” as he asked, “Why don’t we hear from the 70-80 percenters?” referring to the Americans who really don’t have any strong views politically.
His idea? Using the motto “Take it down a notch for America”, Stewart stated that he will provide the signs for citizens to hold while marching, which will have the “appropriate” level of emotion for politics. Some examples of what he feels is appropriate include, “I disagree with you, but I’m pretty sure you’re not Hitler” and “I am not afraid of Muslims/Tea Partiers/Socialists/Immigrants/Gun Owners/Gay…but I am scared of Spiders.”
Stewart exclaimed the rally to be, “A million moderate march…a clarion call for rationality!”
So how did Colbert plan to trump this one? “The March to Keep Fear Alive” of course! Colbert announced that he will not “bring it down a notch” and exclaimed, “Now is the time for all good men to freak out for freedom!” adding, “Need I point out that ‘reason’ is one letter away from ‘treason?’
Meanwhile, rumors are flying about a march to counter Glenn Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, a spoof by Colbert which would be called “Restoring Truthiness”. An Internet campaign has been launched to try and persuade the comedian to hold the mock rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on October 10.
As a blogger posted his midnight rambling, and mentioned that there should be a rally by Colbert to denounce the nation’s capital, Huffington Post picked up the cause and turned it into a genuine Internet movement, which made it to Facebook. So far it has 8000 fans. As far as Glenn Beck is concerned, perhaps imitation truly is the best for of flattery.
