Mamma Mia! the feature-film adaptation of the musical based on Abba’’s hits, has taken just over 69m pounds at the box office, beating Titanics record by a close margin.
The news of the record comes just a few days after the film picked up two Golden Globe nominations including Best Actress for Meryl Streep.
Running in its 23rd week, the movie has now become the number one film in 15 countries.
President of Universal Pictures International, David Kosse, has said that its “truly phenomenal” of the movie to break the record set by 1997 blockbuster Titanic.
“This film has exceeded our expectations and delighted audiences around the world since it opened in July, The Daily Express quoted him as saying.

Mamma Mia! has slightly exceeded that with takings of 69,066,035 pounds, while Harry Potter and the Philosopher’’s Stone is in third place with 66,096,060 pounds.
The movie, which features Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Julie Walters and Dominic Cooper along with Streep, was nominated for best film (musical or comedy) and best actress (musical or comedy). (ANI)
