It is a great idea to have a movie titled “In Love with Kerala,” especially since Kerala is becoming increasingly popular as a tourist destination after having been listed among the fifty most beautiful places in the world. While it is appropriate to have a foreigner to depict his love for Kerala, it would be a shame if non-Malayalees were given other roles, lead or otherwise. After all the film is about Kerala. Kerala has a population of 32 million people. It should be possible to find Malayalees for every role in the film. The Roman Catholic Church came to Kerala in 1500 via the Portuguese. Out of the six million Christians in Kerala, most are Catholics. The two Eastern churches, Syro Malabar Catholic Church, to which all the authentic ancient St Thomas Christians belong, along with later converts which joined the church, and the recently formed (1930) Syro Malankara Catholic Church, which broke away from the Jacobite church, are in full communion with the Roman Catholic Church. So depicting an Italian in love with Kerala is quite appropriate.

Here is small list of independent countries which has a population LESS than Kerala. The list has been provided to demonstrate that the population of Kerala is more than many independent countries.
Netherlands (Holland) - 17 million, Greece - 11 million, Portugal - 11 million, Belgium - 10.5 million, Sweden - 9.3 million, Austria - 8.3 million, Switzerland - 7.3 million, Denmark - 5.6 million, Norway - 4.8 million, Ireland - 4.7 million, Finland - 5.4 million, Singapore - 4.8 million, Australia - 22 million, New Zealand - 4.3 million, among others.
So if these countries can function as independent nations, Kerala should be able to produce its own actors and actresses for a movie about Kerala. It is not about choosing the most popular filmstar in India. It is about depicting Kerala.
Kerala need not go the way of Bollywood which constantly gets film stars from overseas to depict Indian culture.

Director Danny Boyle has shown that even completely new faces can do great work if given the right training. So even if the director is unhappy with the current crop of Malayali faces, he should bravely choose authentic Malayali faces and train them to act in the film about Kerala.

OK. So Mamta Mohandas is a Malayalee woman. Thank God!

This comment was made because the film Pazhassi Raja, which is supposedly about Kerala resistance to British rule has many non-Malayali actors. Music direction by Illayaraja is a different matter. After all the supposed independence movement didn’t have any particular musical backing while it actually happened. Tamils are the great geniuses in South Indian Classical - Carnatic - music. No doubt about that. Illayaraja is a true musical genius and he will do great things for a Malayalam movie.
