Mad Men star Jon Hamm confesses that he struggled with depression

john-hamm Sep 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Jon Hamm has admitted that the death of his father some 18 years ago, got to him so hard that he battled chronic depression and lived on antidepressants and therapy to survive.

The 38-year-old “Mad Men” star revealed that his work also helped him to battle his depression.

Hamm’s mother died when he was just 10 years old. His mother died of stomach cancer and he moved in with his father. His father also died 10 years later. Hamm’s mother and father divorced when he was just a baby.

When Hamm’s father passed away, he was a student at the University of Texas and he revealed in his interview with the UK Magazine The Observer that it was the parents of some of his friends that moved in to aid him through his education.

The actor admitted that antidepressants and therapy helps when you find yourself in depressing situations. He said therapy and antidepressants “gives … another perspective when you are so lost”. He said that, “You can change your brain chemistry enough to think: ‘I want to get up in the morning; I don’t want to sleep until four in the afternoon. I want to get up and … go to work and …’ Reset the auto-meter, kick-start the engine!”

He however said that he was on therapy and antidepressants for a brief period in his life.
