Aug 9, (THAINDIAN NEWS) “Mad Men” is one of the most anticipated American television series which is aired on AMC every Monday. The show is loved and appreciated by the audience owing to its 1960’s background and wonderfully woven plot structure along with its powerhouse cast. The popularity of the show and its characters has made one of the reputed doll manufacturers to make the replica’s of the characters in the show. However, the doll of Christina Hendricks, who plays the role of Joan Harris in the show got maximum attention as the curvaceous actress’ doll is made to a plus 4 size zero curve doll which is absolutely opposite to her.
The makers of Barbie, Mattel made the doll of Christina Hendricks with a normal bust-line and flat-chest. Dietitian Sion Porter of British Dietetic Association readily opposed it saying that there can be no reason a size 14 cannot be “healthy and attractive” so it is sad and “alarming” that toy manufacturers can not represent the healthy figure. Sion Porter also mentioned that when young generations aspire to imitate magazine photographs or these kind of toys, they are actually trying to achieve impossible because the images have been “airbrushed”.
The Mattel representative defended the statement saying that the “Mad Men” dolls are distinctively made to capture the artistically beautiful or pleasing appearance of the show. The voluptuous actress Christina Hendricks has recently received praises for her plus 14 hourglass figure from the Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone as being a “role model” for the girls. In “Mad Men,” Christina Hendricks plays the role of an office manager of Sterling Cooper who mentors a group of women who must deal with the unfeeling attitude of the professional advertising executives.
