Aug 18 (IBNS) In a deal that is described as “big,” Lionsgate has committed to a wide 2010 release for Kick-Ass.

Lionsgate has acquired the US and Canadian rights to the action/comedy based on the hit series by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.

So it wouldn’t be long until Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass” adaptation found itself a distributor. It was also revealed that three studios were vying for the opportunity to bring the project to theaters.

“Matthew Vaughn is an amazing talent and a true original, and he has brought a whole new mindset to the action genre with ‘Kick-Ass.’ ‘Kick-Ass’ redefines the boundaries in terms of humor, action, story, character and tone—it’s the kind of movie that reminds us of why we go to the movies in the first place. Lionsgate is thrilled to bring KICK-ASS home to give it the next-generation launching pad it deserves,” said Jason Constantine, Lionsgate President of Acquisitions and Co-Productions.

The movie is based on a comic by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. about a comic-obsessed teenager who decides to become a real-life superhero despite his lack of any superpowers, reports Variety.com.

The impressive star cast includes Nicolas Cage, Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and “Superbad’s” Christopher Mintz-Plasse.

U.S. distributors got their first look at a rough cut of “Kick-Ass”, a few days after the fanboys at Comic-Con saw clips of the film and gave it their blessing.

Vaughn’s Marv Films shingle and Brad Pitt’s Plan B produced and privately financed the project.

Kick-Ass is currently in post-production with an expected release date in early 2010.

“Making and financing KICK-ASS has been an amazing experience, and we’ve had two important goals from the start: make a singularly entertaining film and find the right studio to release it,” said Vaughn.

“With Lionsgate, I know that I’ve got a supportive and fearless team behind me. It’s going to be fun working together to bring the film to audiences and those who are already fans of the comic book,” he added.
