That Levon Helm has made his return to the music scene is a really fortunate matter for all ardent music lovers. After waging a long drawn battle with throat cancer, that he has made a successful comeback in 2007 with the Grammy winning “Dirt Farmer”, is a matter of much praise and speaks a lot about his tremendous courage.
This time, Levon Helm embarks on his musical journey once more with the new album “Electric Dirt”. The new offering is surely going to please his ardent fans. His vocal modulations and tone is absolutely ageless and beyond the common restricted periphery of ‘cliched’ music; he goes beyond all that to prove his merit. At 69, he is still at a level of his won.
“Electric Dirt” is a fitting tribute to the those rock and roll days that crown the grooving days of the drummer belonging to the legendary “The Band”. The album has been recorded with Larry Campbell and the other members of his “Midnight Ramble” days that were held at his Woodstock residence in New York. The stage is set and the verdict is that Helm is ready to rock once more. The new album has been receiving rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Though many find the tracks “different” during the initial hearing, it settles down later on. Well classified in the category of ‘hard to forget’ songs surely.
The tracks are generally a reminiscence of his golden days with “The Band” and has a carefree, soulful and earnest feel to it.
Levon Helm has been ranked 91 in the list of 100 Greatest Singers of All Time by Rolling Stone Magazine in November 2008.
