Lennon Lyrics Get $1.2 Million At NYC Auction

john5 June 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The handwritten lyrics of the final song “A Day in the Life” on the Beatle’s “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album which were written by John Lennon himself, were bought at a New York auction today (Friday) for $1.2 million.

The winning bidder , whom Sotheby’s auction house refused to identify, made the winning offer by telephone. The price was far more than the estimated figures which was expected, between 500,000 dollars and 800,000 dollars.

The sheet of paper was hand written on both sides, and had John Lennon’s corrections had written on them as well. The lyrics were written in blue ball point pen and black felt tipped marker, with a few additions in red ink. One one side, the original first draft was hand written in a hurried cursive style. One the other side, the words are almost all in capital letters, and has the corrections seen on the first page added.

In ‘Rolling Stone Magazine’s’ top 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, “A Day in the Life” was listed at number 26. The album on which it was featured, “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” won four Grammy Awards in 1968.
