Leela Samson likely to head censor board
March 28th, 2011 - 8:23 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 28 (IANS) Well-known Bharatnatyam dancer Leela Samson is expected to be the next chief of the censor board, an official of the ministry of information and broadcasting said.
She will succeed yesteryears actress Sharmila Tagore.
“The outgoing censor chief has requested that the new person should be appointed before her tenure ends (on March 31),” said the official, adding that the annoucement will be made soon.
Samson juggles many role of dancer, writer, teacher, mentor, choreographer, director of Kalakshetra, cultural advisor to the prime minister and chairperson of the Sangeet Natak Academi and now she will monitor movies produced by one of the largest film producing nations.
Known as one of the most technically brilliant and dynamic dancers of all time, Samson recently wrote a biography of dancer and social activist Rukmini Devi Arundale, the founder of the Chennai-based Kalakshetra, that the Indian parliament, in January 1994, recognised as an Institute of National Importance.
