London, Jan 20 (IANS) British filmmaker Terry Gilliam is still fighting reports that his friend “The Dark Knight” star Heath Ledger was experimenting with drugs at the time he died, a year ago. He says the late actor was “clean”.Gilliam, who was working with Ledger on his final film “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus” when the star died, is desperate to make people aware that Ledger died from an overdose of prescription drugs he was taking to try and cure insomnia and not much stronger narcotics, as suggested by people, reported imdb.com

“The insomnia was really getting to him. We know about the pills, but he had stopped smoking. Marijuana was no longer in his life. He wasn’t even drinking. This was a body that had cleansed itself for over a year of anything,” said the filmmaker.

“They (media) tried too hard to pin (drug abuse) on him, but they couldn’t because Heath was as clean as you could be,” he added. Ledger died Jan 22, 2008.
