London, June 22 (IANS) “Gavin and Stacey” star Larry Lamb says he has gone deaf in one ear because he didn’t take his malaria pills while visiting Senegal to publicise the plight of some of the world’s poorest children.
Lamb went down with a debilitating fever shortly after returning home from Dakar, Senegal. The infection reached his ears and as a result he cannot hear from one of his ears, reports dailymail.co.uk.

“I was told that in theory Dakar isn’t a risky place for malaria, but I was advised to take these anti-malarial pills… the people travelling with me didn’t bother,” he said.

“We were in and out within a week. Back home in north London I felt fine, so stopped taking the Malarone pills. I’d been told I should take them for eight days after leaving Senegal, but didn’t understand why as I was completely well,” he added.

The actor was struck by malarial fever and the infection caused damage to his ears.

“At one point I felt like I was dying. But the real shock was when I realised I couldn’t hear properly,” he said.

The 62-year-old is now upset and blames himself for his condition. He also warns celebrities to take necessary precautions while travelling to Africa.

“I can only blame myself I was stupid and I’ve paid the price. I want to warn other people, including celebrities who go abroad to promote charities. I won’t be making any more such trips myself. Of course, I saw a lot worse in Africa, but it has been really upsetting,” he said.

The actor is now taking preventive measure to insure his other ear is not affected. “I’m ultra-careful now to protect my better ear. I always wear ear plugs when swimming and avoid loud noises whenever possible.”
