After 19 weeks of action-packed performances, America chose 23 year old Kris Allen as its winner on the finale of the eighth season of American Idol, knocking off the judges’ favorite Adam Lambert, known for his theatrical performances, sexuality and black nail polish.

Allen, from Conway, Ark., said, “I’m sorry, I don’t even know what to feel right now. This is crazy, ” just moments after host Ryan Seacrest announced, “The underdog, the dark horse, comes back and wins the nation over.”

Adam Lambert was an early favorite for both his magnificent vocals and bold style and confidence. He also flaunted his sexuality to his advantage. A few months ago, pictures of him kissing another man got the singer a fresh round of public curiosity and free promotion. He was also a judges’ favorite and was often seen grabbing the spotlight and the judges’ compliments as if instead of American Idol he was on an Adam Lambert show. In spite of his favorable run on the show, it was never a foregone conclusion that he will receive the confetti shower on the finale. When the two finalists were announced last week, it had been a close call with just a million out of 88 million votes separating the two finalists.

Speaking about his “Guyliner” co-finalist, Allen said, “It feels good. But Adam deserves this”, as Lambert clapped on in good humor. Meanwhile Simon Cowell, who had initially rooted for Lambert, complimented both finalists saying, “To both of you, and I don’t normally mean this, I thought you were both brilliant. …. The future’s all yours.” The results he said, were very reminiscent of last year when the title almost went to David Archuleta before David Cook grabbed it with a superb performance.
