Kris Allen wins American Idol 2009 crown in controversial finishMay 21st, 2009 - 1:35 pm ICT by John Le Fevre
Kris Allen, a 23-yer-old married college student from Conway Arkansas has won the coveted crown of American idol on the popular American television talent show of the same name
In announcing Allen had garnered the majority of almost 100 million viewer votes, host Ryan Seacrest said, “the underdog, the dark horse, comes back and wins the nation over.”
Allen’s soulful rendition of Ain’t No Sunshine wowed the audience and viewers alike, but his performance of No Boundaries, a song co-written by judge Kara DioGuardi which didn’t suit his voice caused him a minor setback.
However, the support from viewers did not appear to sit well with judge Simon Cowell, who refused to rise from his seat and join fellow judges in applauding the winner. Host Ryan Seacrest also managed to stun the winner by saying, “Adam deserves this.”
Prior to Wednesday nights two-hour long episode, 27-year-old Adam Lambert from Los Angeles was considered by many to be the favorite to take out the title for the shows eighth season finale.
When Allen and Lambert were declared the finalists last week, just one million viewer votes separated the pair out of 88 million votes cast.
