Nov 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf” by Ntozake Shange has always been regarded as one of the most celebrated theatrical master pieces of all times. The theater has been recently adopted into a movie by director Tyler Perry, entitled “For Colored Girls” which has released today. The movie stars Kimberly Elise in one of the leading role of the character named Crystal, who is subjected to domestic violence by her war veteran husband, suffering from post traumatic stress disorder.
The other star caste of “For Colored Girls” are Janet Jackson, Loretta Devine, Thandie Newton, Anika Rose, Kerry Washington, Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg, Macy Gray, Michael Ealy, Omari Hardwick, Richard Lawson, Hill Harper and Khalil Kain. The story is an interesting blend of the life of three women who live in the same Harlem apartment building, with each one suffering from a personal problem that binds them together. Where Crystal (Kimberly Elise), is going through an unhappy married life in the company of her abusive husband, Jo (Janet Jackson) is a successful lady and a magazine editor. However, her husband has a secret relationship with another woman. Juanita (Loretta Devine) is a relationship counselor, but she herself cannot settle her own turbulent love life. This is a women centric film, which puts the male centrism and chauvinism into lime light.
Kimberly Elise said in an interview that the character of Crystal made a great impact on her tender mind, as it did on other women, when the theater was released in 1974. As the role was offered to her, she thought to take it up as a challenge and play the role as many women still go voiceless after being subjected to domestic violence. Although it was a bit scary for her to play the role, she was exited while diving “in to some deep, deep waters”.
