The director of Thailand’s Central Institute of Forensic Science (CIFS) has said Kill Bill and 1970’s Kung Fu star David Carradine may have died while participating in a bizarre sex ritual.
The 72-year-old actor’s body was found inside a closet in his suite in Swissotel Nai Lert Park Hotel about 11am on Thursday.
Police said the body was found curled up inside the wardrobe with one end of a shoelace tied around his penis and the other end fastened around his neck. Both of his hands were bound with a cord which was also tied around his neck.
Kunying Porntip said he could have been be trying auto-erotic asphyxiation to gain sexual pleasure and may have accidentally suffocated. Other evidence supporting this theory included a penis shrine inside his room.
Bangkok metropolitan police chief Lt Gen Vorapong Chiewpreecha said the rope attached to his his genitals and the one around his neck were tied together.
“Under these circumstances we cannot be sure that he committed suicide, but he may have died while masturbating,” he said.
Thai police medical examiners completed an autopsy on Friday. Though the details were not made public, sources at the hospital said it stated there was no signs of injury to his body and “he died from an acute lack of oxygen.”
Dr Nanthana Sirisap, director of Chulalongkorn Hospital’s autopsy centre, said the postmortem examination was necessary because of the “unusual circumstances surrounding Carradine’s death”.
“This is not a normal case,” she said.
Carradine came from a family of performers and was the eldest son of well-known character actor John Carradine.
He will be well remembered for his roles as Kwai Chang Caine, the fugitive Shaolin monk in the 1970s television series Kung Fu, as well as ‘Big’ Bill Shelly in Boxcar Bertha.
In a career which included more than 100 movies over 45 years, Carradine notched up three Golden Globe Award nominations, an Emmy nomination and a string of other accolades.
In December 2004 he married his current wife, Annie Bierman. He has three children including actresses Calista and Kansas.
