Kidnapped French journalists released in Afghanistan
June 30th, 2011 - 12:26 am ICT by IANSParis, June 29 (IANS) Two French journalists who were kidnapped in Afghanistan more than a year ago have been released, the government said Wednesday.
Herve Ghesquiere and Stephane Taponnier, who worked for France 3 TV channel, were abducted Dec 30, 2009. Their three Afghan guides were also taken away.
The Elysee Palace - the official residence of the French president - confirmed the release, Xinhua reported, citing an official statement.
President Nicolas Sarkozy was rejoiced at their freedom, the statement said.
“The two are in good health. They will be in France within hours. They are now in the hands of French forces,” Prime Minister Francois Fillon told parliament.
He, however, gave no details on how the two journalists were freed.
France has announced withdrawal of approximately 4,000 troops deployed in Afghanistan.
