London, Dec 25 (IANS) Actress Nicole Kidman has upset neighbours near her Australian country home after planting 150 of the notorious leylandii tree to shield her house from onlookers.
Kidman’s five-bedroom property is in a village called Sutton Forest, around 70 miles south west of Sydney. The 42-years-old has had the cypress leylandii saplings, ranging in height from 4ft to 6ft tall, planted at her 140-acre property called Bunya Hill, reported dailymail.co.uk
Kidman has boosted security at the property ahead of her sister Antonia’s wedding to financier Craig Marran, which is expected to take place at the retreat before the end of the year.
Along with the trees, she has also had what’s been described as an ‘ugly’ 50-metre green nylon fence erected by the main gate and a 100-metre earth mound, both to shield the property from the main road.
But it is the mammoth tree-planting project which has upset locals who have been campaigning against leylandii for several years arguing they can grow to an immense height and turn into an eyesore.
The fast-growing trees can grow up to 20 metres high and eight metres wide and have caused disputes among neighbours.
Greg Barnsley, 49, whose three-acre property borders Kidman’s, said: “Sutton Forest sits in incredibly scenic countryside but those trees can ruin those views. They look nice and bushy as saplings but after 15 years they’ll grow to a height of 20 metres and be eight metres wide.”
