London, Oct 23 (IANS) Actress Nicole Kidman has hit out at Hollywood filmmakers for contributing to domestic violence by portraying women as weak sex objects in the movies.
Kidman was testifying before a US congressional committee considering legislation to deal with violence against women overseas, through humanitarian relief efforts and grants to local organisations, reports dailyrecord.co.uk.
When asked by Republican representative Dana Rohrabacher whether the movie industry had “played a bad role”, Kidman said: “Probably”.
She added: “I can’t be responsible for all of Hollywood but I can certainly be responsible for my own career.”
Kidman is one of the highest-paid stars and has carved a career playing strong female characters. In “Dead Calm”, she played a young wife who fights back against a psychotic killer holding her captive on a boat.
Her other strong roles include troubled mother Grace in ghost story “The Others” and Satine in the musical extravaganza “Moulin Rouge”.
