Kerry Katona to have drugs tests to prove she’s free of cocaine addiction
April 12th, 2010 - 6:17 pm ICT by ANILondon, April 12 (ANI): Former Atomic Kitten member Kerry Katona has agreed to have regular drugs tests to prove she is free of cocaine addiction and that she is capable of taking care of her children.
Katona, 29, claims that she has ditched the drugs for ever and has vowed to become a better mum to her four children, but she will still have to take random tests as part of her contract with her management team.
Her revelation about her drugged up life left child welfare groups blasting her for her “appalling neglect” of her family during cocaine binges, and campaigners branded her a “worthless individual”.
Katona had confessed that her habit was once so bad she would lock her bedroom door to keep them out as she snorted line after line of coke for up to three days at a time.
And she revealed how she would ignore her daughter Molly as she stood outside the door shouting for her mum.
“The kids knew if the bathroom door was locked they mustn’t come in. They would be downstairs with a nanny and she knew not to let them up to our bedroom,” the Daily Star quoted her as revealing.
“I wasn’t the mother I wanted to be. I knew doing drugs was wrong. I’d hear Molly outside and shout that Mummy was having a bipolar day.
“I’d take so much coke I’d have a fit. Then I’d come around and do another line,” she said.
Katona also claimed her marriage to Mark Croft, 38, was “just about coke”.
“Mostly we’d have three-day coke sessions and not eat,” she stated.
But family welfare group Family Focus founder Dr Adrian Rogers launched an angry attack on April 11.
Exeter-based Dr Rogers claimed Katona’s care for her children, Molly, eight, Lily-Sue, seven, Heidi, three, and two-year-old Max, had shown “appalling neglect”.
And the expert questioned whether talking about her children in such a detailed way was responsible.
“If she now intends raising her standards of care for her children that is to be praised,” he said.
“But if this is merely a publicity stunt, aimed at rebuilding her flagging career, then she is a worthless individual.
“Her youngsters appear to have had a pretty miserable life up to now - her priority should be to devote herself to them above all else,” he stated.
Katona, whose son Max turned two on April 11, confessed to feeling remorse.
“I feel shame, guilt, but also relief. I’m finally owning up to the person I’ve been these past few years,” she said.
“I want my children to have a better life than I had. That’s why I know I have to sort myself out now,” she added.
Her agent Claire Powell defended her decision to speak out.
“Kerry is desperate to change and do the best for her children and deserves a chance to prove it,” she explained.
Adding: “Part of our contract is that Kerry will provide regular drug tests - the last was four days ago. She knows that if she fails one she’ll be history.” (ANI)
