Kate Winslet stars in ‘Mildre Pierce’ remake
March 28th, 2011 - 9:38 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattLos Angeles, Mar 28 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The 1945 seven-part movie “Mildred Pierce” has been made into a two part movie. The movie was set in 1931 which was the period just following the depression and Todd Hayne’s decision to rework the movie following the 2008 depression makes the movie all the more significant.
Kate Winslet plays Mildred in the movie. In the movie, Midred has two children, Veda and Ray. She has the challenge to take care of the children at the time when finding job was very difficult in the United States. Following her husband’s seemingly irresponsible nature, Mildred considered prostitution but after failing to make the mark for treating her clients well, Mildred abandoned the plan and later ended up as a waitress. Being a waitress then was not as easy and simple as they are now. Mildred went through several problems as a waitress.
The 1945 movie was based on a 1941 novel written by James M. Cain. In part of the book, Cain wrote that, “Everybody gets a chicken-and-waffle dinner, or chicken and vegetables if they want, all at the same price.”
Mildred finally got enough money and moved away from being a waitress but eventually lost Ray. The movie has a truly tragic end.
