New Delhi, Feb 28 (IANS) K Sera Sera, a film production company, Sunday announced it will make a movie on history of Indian hockey for the “resurgence of the game in the country”.
“We were planning to lend our support in one form or the other since a long time for the resurgence of hockey in the country. Being a media and production company, we thought what better way than a movie? It’s something that is always there and watched by everyone in the country,” Sanjay Gupta, CEO of K Sera Sera, told IANS over phone from Mumbai.
“We are planning a nostalgic journey of the evolution of hockey to the glorious days of the game in India and what it has come to now. A national game being relegated to number 12 rank globally is very sad. The plight of the players is upsetting… we are also contemplating a television show and a talent hunt on the same,” he added.
The Hockey World Cup started in the capital Sunday.
Asked if it was a deliberate attempt to announce the project during the same time, Gupta said: “It was an opportune time but it was co-incidental. And it happens to be good both for us and for the sport.”
Bollywood also saw a movie weaved around the sport in Shah Rukh Khan starrer “Chak De! India” (2007).
An instant hit, it explored religious bigotry, ethnic-regional prejudice and sexism in contemporary India through field hockey.
“‘Chak De! India’ is still fresh in people’s minds despite being on women’s hockey and we are trying to contribute to that… Our focus is not really on the commercial side of it but more towards the social responsibility. It’s a chain reaction. If there is interest (shown) by the masses (in the game), even (other) corporates will interfere (for its resurgence),” said Gupta.
“We are targeting the youngsters, as they form an overwhelming population today and are not really well-versed with hockey. We will try to dig out the passion and the fervour towards the game in them and inject in a nationalist feeling towards the same,” he added.
Asked about the script, director, casting and other details of the movie, Gupta said: “We have not really finalised and declared anything or anyone yet. We are working on it.”
“We were, however, contemplating to release it before Commonwealth Games in Delhi but we will have to look into it now, as everything is still under research,” he added.
Having produced and presented films like “Sarkar”, “Golmaal”, “Partner” and “Aab Tak Chappan”, K Sera Sera is also “contemplating to bid for a team in the next Indian Premiere League (IPL)”.
