Santiago, Nov 8 (IANS/EFE) Spanish singer Julio Iglesias, who has sold more than 350 million discs around the world, said that “I can’t create a new hit tune anymore but I sing much better”.

In a statement citied by the Chilean daily El Mercurio, the 68-year-old crooner said: “I couldn’t sing so well before. Now I do it much better”.

Iglesias said he decided to record an album of his 14 greatest hits with the voice he has now.

The singer said that “1″, the name he has given the new disc, is the first volume of a big collection of his classics and that it will be in Chilean record stores in the next few days.

Iglesias said that if he were capable of writing something like “Abrazamen” (Hug Me), one of his many hits, “of course I’d come out with a new album, but I can’t create new hits like that any more - what I can do is sing a song like that a thousand times better”.

“My new disc ‘1′ went on sale some 20 days ago in Colombia and Brazil, and in the first country I sold more in one week than in the last 10 years,” said the artist, who began his career as a vocalist in the mid-1970s when an injury cut short his promising sports career as goalkeeper for the Real Madrid soccer club.
