randyDec.14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The much anticipated season finale episode of the popular television series ‘Dexter‘ was aired on Sunday and the show ended with such startling revelations that it kept the viewers glued to the television screens. One of the major events that took place in the finale episode was the unexpected death of Rita, the wife of the central character Dexter. This means that Julie Benz who played the role of Rita would not be seen in the next season, which is scheduled to go on air next year.

Although, the unexpected twists and turns in the finale episode ensured that the viewers have a great time, all the fans of actress Julie Benz were left disappointed as the death of her character meant her inevitable exit from the show. Meanwhile, the episode also highlights Rita’s realization that she shares a stressful relationship with Dexter although she also supports him in every way that she can. Moreover, the finale episode also saw Arthur attempt to convince Dexter, which ultimately goes in vain. At the same time, Debra also witnesses a shocking revelation when it comes to light that Dexter is the brother of Ice Truck Killer. One of the most interesting moments of the show was surely the sequence in which Dexter finally manages to kill Trinity.

Overall, the finale episode of the popular series managed to live up to the expectations of the viewers and with one of the central characters dead, the viewers surely cannot wait to witness the next season of the television series. Meanwhile, one thing is for sure that the unexpected revelations of the finale managed to give a new direction to the series.

I am very upset with Showtime (CBS). They had a ZILLION make-believe people they could have killed off and they chose Rita! INSANE!

I guess Julie Benz can get her own talk show now…

  2. Peter David Says:

There’s nothing inevitable about her departure. Dexter’s father has been dead since the series began and he’s a regular. There’s nothing to say Rita can’t haunt Dexter as his father does.

  3. kelly Says:

Rita was annoying anyway and their relationship was ridiculous and unbelievable. ‘Twas a shocker though!

  4. Peter David Says:

Hunh. She never annoyed me. I thought she was sweet. In fact, learning that Julie Benz was in the series is what got me started watching it.

  5. kelly Says:

I saw her on an episode of The King of Queen’s and she was great, I just didn’t like her character on Dexter, but I was shocked and a little sad at this season’s ending.

  6. Bill Says:

I’m very disappointed with Rita’s death… Those who say Rita was “unbelievable” just did not met someone like her in the real life. Their relationship was the most promising source of endless plots as it was such an imperfect and fragile story. It could have ended in so many other interesting ways… or continued to be this ups and downs. Now Dexter alone with three kids?? Such a sadness…

  7. ajt Says:

Actually, about four episodes ago, I thought they telegraphed they were going to kill her off in the last episode of the season. I can’t imagine I’m the only person out there that didn’t receive the same telegraph.

Will some other actress now have to get fake boobs to replace Benz’s fake boobs? Can’t have a season of “Dexter” without somebody having fake boobs.

  8. Peter David Says:

Yes, why waste time with fake boobs when there are so many genuine boobs in Internet comments threads?

  9. kelly Says:

I could see LaGuerta with implants.

In my opinion, Dexter and Rita’s relationship was the most promising source of boredom and frustration. I think they ended the season in an incredibly interesting way; how will Dexter get out of this one? He can’t exactly allow Rita’s death to look like a ‘Trinity’ killing. What’s he going to do with those kids? Is he now going to raise Harrison the way he was? By the “code”? I think her death is going to make the next season very interesting!!

  10. Bill Says:

What about the trinity family? unless they get run over by a monster truck while getting to the station everybody will know that Dexter’s Kyle Butler was friends with the killer. How could Dexter disguise Rita’s trinity kill? put her in a bag and throw it in the ocean??
My guess is that, like all other tv show there’s a point they start getting inconsistent for the sake of entertainment. That’s when I get bored and frustrated. Only time will tell!

  11. kelly Says:

Do you really think they’ll bring the Miller Family back next season? I’ve wondered about that myself. My guess is they’ll assume Trinity skipped town and the family will be forgotten. It will get pretty messy if the whole ‘Kyle Butler’ thing comes to the surface, but Dexter always has a way of covering his behind. Although, even Debra seemed a little suspicious when she found Dexter at the house already. The writer’s are going to have to be crafty with this one, but I’ve got no doubt it’ll be great!!

  12. Mokon Says:

I’m torn on how i feel about the death of rita. On one hand yes she did get in the way of his “work” a lot but on the other hand XD she was just so f***ing adorable and pretty and sweet lol….i’ll be interested to see where the show goes from this…will dexter be a single parent? More bogged down with family matters than ever? If so i may just change the channel

  13. Mike Says:

I am very disappointed to see Julie Benz leave the show. Rita was for Dexter what Yin is to Yang. She embodied his desire to be a better person. Without that stability he will inevitably spiral downward and become more like his dark passenger. In my opinion she was his ONLY chance for redemption.

  14. Peter David Says:

I don’t disagree with the importance of Rita in his life, but I think if Deb had died it would have been even more catastrophic. He’s still got her, so that counts for something.

  15. jahmyrr Says:

Rita CAN NOT be dead. Dexter is struggling to juggle the family, work, and his dark passenger as it is. Now he has to do all this with a newborn, a teenager, AND a young boy and no help? unless he gives up the kids, THIS would be unrealistic. Rita is what kept Dexters head on straight and gave him a sense of purpose and willingness to grow and be better.

Plain and simple, my GUESS is that the Producers are giving cookie cutter answers in all the interviews ive seen. WHY? because Rita isnt dead. I expect to see season 5 start off with Dexter having imagined seeing that and Harry pointing out easily it could have been the truth and for Dexter to be that much more careful next time. That or Dexter starts off the season by waking up and showing us it was a nightmare! Either way, Rita was a key element to this show that i really hope isnt taken away.

    LONG LIVE RITA!!! ;)

  16. Peter David Says:

I think you’re wrong. I mean, I’d love it if you were right because I adore Julie Benz, but I think you’re wrong. I think Rita’s dead; it would just be stupendously bad writing to undo that season finale, and “Dexter” doesn’t have bad writers. I still believe that Benz may show up as a ghostly incarnation of herself to badger Dexter just as Harry does, but I’m pretty sure Rita’s bitten the dust. What’s going to be really insane is when–and I’m sure this will happen–Rita’s mother moves in to attend to the children.

  17. miguel Says:

    no,
i believe dexter will give up cody and ester to paul’s parents and only raise harrison as a single father.

  18. David Cano Says:

Dexter’s father is also dead, but he’s still on the show. I think Rita will appear as Harry does, he will support Dexter from “the other side”…

  19. Rob Says:

So happy Rita has finally been killed off, now I don’t have to fast-forward through her annoying guilt-trips and constant judgment!

  20. Mare Says:

Rita was sweet when the series started then she turned whiny and manipulative.I couldn’t stand her. Dexter was always good to her. That whole scene in the car with the coffee when she was driving Dexter to work pissed me off.

  21. kelly Says:

Finally! I was beginning to worry I might be thinking of another ‘Rita’ on Dexter with all of the people writing on this website who actually LIKED her character! Good Riddance, RITA!!

  22. Lisa Says:

I am happy that Rita is gone. She was so annoying and what an inconsiderate wife. She stays at home and doesn’t have to work and would let Dexter get up in the middle of the night to take care of the baby. How selfish. He couldn’t even stay awake at work. I will not miss her at all. i also think he’ll give the two older kids to Paul’s parents.

  23. BJ Says:

    BRING RITA BACK!

  24. RITA WASACUNT Says:

I could not stand that wench - thank god she is finally dead. What a bitch….always complaining about everything. I was rooting for her to be killed and I got my wish.

  25. Morgan Says:

I was really shocked by Rita’s sudden death. I really feel bad for the kids and Dexter. :’(

I hope it was Dexter’s crazy dream and she comes back next season!

  26. Duda Says:

    Wonder who he’ll bang next.

  27. Peter David Says:

I doubt he’ll become romantically involved with anyone. The main reason he became involved with Rita was to provide a cover for his activities. He didn’t want to be the typical loner who kept to himself and thus possibly be a target of suspicion. Now he’s raising kids, so he still has that cover, as a single father. A romance would provide a needless complication.

  28. Noah Says:

That ending was such a shock. I just can’t stop thinking about it. Rita provided a foundation for Dexter, and Julie Benz’s acting was so great that I am actually mourning the loss of her character. She was so sweet, kind, and loving, and Dexter really needed someone like her in his life. I simply can’t believe that the season ended like that. Great writing. Unforgettable moment. But super sad none-the-less.

  29. Kelly O Says:

Well, it is certain that Julie Benz won’t be back, at least as a regular character on Dexter, because she is slated to play Katherine’s lesbian lover in an extended role as Robin on Desperate Housewives…I’m actually watching it right now. I really liked Rita on Dexter, and I can’t pretend to know what the excellent writers will do, but here’s to hoping Julie comes back in a recurring guest role in the same capacity of Dexter’s dead father.

  30. Anonymous Says:

Anyone who does not share the same sociopathic, twisted sense of reality as the character of Dexter or even his brother, the Ice Truck Killer, would be disgusted in the choice to kill off the only character in the show that gave Dexter promise in finally becoming a normal human being. He kills people, even if it IS only bad guys, they make it blatantly obvious that has nothing to do with his reasons for killing. No, Rita was the reason he started to become human, Rita was the ONLY person on the show that significantly changed his character for the better. His sister and son can keep him balanced, but without the hope of him becoming an actual human being, this show has officially lost my interest. What kind of sicko wants the hero of a story to be a murderous psychopath? You get involved with a character that you can admire or relate to, and the only relatable aspect of Dexter was that he obviously has mental problems, but he slowly crawls out of his own head with the hope of one day leading a normal life and truly becoming a normal person without a “dark passenger” to worry about.
Someone up here wrote there are no bad writers for Dexter, well I beg to differ. The only benefit to those final minutes of that finale episode was shock value, NO depth, only disappointment and a pathetic attempt to keep people engaged while fulfilling a contractual obligation. This was a horrible choice, and the show cannot go anywhere I’m interested in going now that Rita is dead. In so many words, this (now) unchangeable sociopath is no protagonist that a sane person would be interested in.
For all the people who are “glad she is dead,” I hope I never run into you on the street because it really says something about the kind of person you are. If you are really engaged in this show, being happy about Rita’s death implies that you should be investigated by the FBI for serial killer traits that most normal people wouldn’t think twice about.

  31. kelly Says:

Anonymous…it’s a TV show, take it easy. If you take the show THAT seriously, perhaps you’re the one with the problem. I think for anyone who is happy Rita’s been “killed” off the show, it’s because she was an annoying moron…

I think it’s a great twist now that Rita’s gone (and again, thank goodness for that!), I’m sure his son will have a much stronger impact than Rita did. Dexter was only acting with Rita, she was his prop. Dexter could never lead a “normal” life, Rita or no Rita, she didn’t make a difference. I’m really looking forward to seeing how this will impact him now-how will he choose to raise his son?

  32. Kevin Says:

I think Rita was the cage that held The Dark Passenger back, she was very important. I loved watching the progression on Rita through out the Seasons. But now that she is dead, I would love for Dexter just to go crazy and lose control of the Dark Passenger…for a bit anyways.

  33. Vanja Says:

I am so unhappy with Rita being killed, she was my favorite character in the show,Dexter cheated on her,Paul was abusing husband, she raised to children alone, and many more and she didnt turn crazy. She was so good i watched the show because of her,but we cant change anything. I can only say,f*** you producers

  34. paul walker Says:

killing rita was stupied you ruined the show

  35. paul walker Says:

Really? October Road, Samantha Who, Mercy, now Dexter? Why do you all have to sensationalize and turn everything into crap? No one cares about crap they can’t relate to. The only thing Dexter had to relate to was Rita, and now you killed her off…Have fun with the lack of viewers because they all got bored with the same-old-crap that every other series attempted and failed….I enjoyed the first 3 seasons. I hope someone finally pulls back the reins of the moron who trying to kill the series. Particularly in the third season finale . Otherwise, I guess I’ll see you on the chopping block next season.

  36. Prof. Ives Says:

    Rita was realistic — YES.
But, it was unrealistic that she would be with Dexter. She illustrated what is destructive about supposedly “normal” women & relationships. This is why she was always treated with irony, as an irrational ditz, while Dexter was made just a bit too perfect as the kind, supportive stepfather (They called us S.N.A.G.s in the 80s/90s, didn’t they?).
Thank Harry they didn’t “off” Deb!

  37. Catherine Says:

So shocked at the death of Rita. She was the only thing which kept him almost normal. Now he is going to go completely off the rails and history will repeat itself, the kid will grow up like Dexter and his father. Bad move. I shall not be watching the show any more. I loved Rita.

  38. Annie Says:

With Ritas passing it gave the show so much more depth to it! I think it was an excellent choice to kill her off. Dexter in the show is very influenced by his family, yes its the moral thing to do (be there for your family). for dexter however thats NOT the case! Were talking about a character who NEEDS to kill. And not just anyone, criminals. As much as he loved Rita, he never REALLY loved her. Yes he loved her companionship, her support but it was a DISGUISE. He needed a family to make EVERYONE else happy…and yes somewhere in there he was too. He felt loved (something he hasnt felt since his mother was killed infront of him). But to say Ritas death was stupid and shit like that is wayyyyy dumb. This helped DEXTER IN SO MANY WAYS!!! Thats one of the reasons why I LOVE this show!! It pushes the envelope on everything! I supported her death from the beginning. And for his son to witness his mother dying??!! Couldnt be more genius!!! Talk about father son bonding =)

  39. Annie Says:

    And Anonymous:

Does this make me a “serial killer”??? For the fact that I hate traditional values that I love a twist? Or the fact that this earth has so many closed-minded morons that they cant even watch a “serial killer” on a fictional show? Hm. Like I said. I love a twist.
