carlosDec 14, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The former host of Food Network’s “Calorie Commando”, Juan-Carlos Cruz was sentenced nine years in state prison on Monday. Juan-Carlos Cruz tried to kill his wife Jennifer Campbell by hiring two homeless men. Surprisingly, the convicted man winked at his wife when the judge read his sentence in the courtroom.

The ex-host of “Calorie Commando” had pleaded to contest on October 26 to the charges that he hired two men to kill his own wife. The media outlets reported that he offered $500 to each of them and also told them every details about his wife so that it becomes easy for them to kill her. However, the whole plan was foiled because the hired killers went to police and informed them about the Food Network host’s plan. Defense attorney Shawn Chapman Holley told on Monday that Juan-Carlos Cruz would spend nine years in prison as he has not committed any violent or serious crime. On the other hand, the prosecutors have not yet released any motive of the case. Later, the media outlets came to know that it was a sting operation by Santa Monica police.

Shawn Chapman Holley also asked Superior Court Judge H. Chester Horn Jr. to reduce the fine from $1,800 fine to $200 but the judge denied all the requests. Juan-Carlos Cruz has published a book named “The Calorie Countdown Cookbook” and his second book “The Love Diet” was released while he was in jail. Juan-Carlos Cruz’s wife Jennifer Campbell was known among their friends as suicidal because of their inability to have children and the chef said that his wife could not kill herself because of her religious beliefs.
