Joseph Hyungmin Son convicted

He could face 15 years to life in prison for raping a 19-year-old girl in 1990. The case seems to have gone cold until an unrelated incident linked Son’s DNA to the rape.
Son is famously called Joe Son and he is best remembered for playing a part in the 1997 movie “Austin Powers.” Son’s role was a minor one in the movie but it was significant enough to get him the attention at the time.
The police demanded the DNA of Joe Son when he was involved in a vandalism case in 2008. When the DNA sample was entered into the database, it linked him to the rape case in 1990. Prosecutors told the court that Joe Son and an accomplice kidnapped the victim into a car. The incident took place on the Christmas Eve of 1990 and they drove the woman to Huntington Beach where they raped and beat her.
He faced multiple sexual charges but most of them were dropped because of the expiration of the statute of limitation.
The other accomplice in the case, 40-year-old Santiago Gaitan was sentenced to 17 years and four months in prison when he pleaded guilty to sexual charges in January of 2011.
