alg_franzen_winfrey_interviewDec 7, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Oprah Winfrey is not only the queen of talk show, but apparently, also the queen of on-air reunion. Nine years after she picked Jonathan Franzen’s book, “The Corrections” for her Book Club, followed by a cold dispute, she invited the ace American author in her show. Nine years back, he responded to Oprah Winfrey’s saying that the book was his creation and therefore its logo was not meant for corporate ownership.

However, Oprah Winfrey decided to bring an end to this cold terms, and give the author a second chance. Even the author apparently seemed delighted to be on the show as that would facilitate the sale of his new books. Even this time, she chose his book, “Freedom”, to incorporate it in her book club once again. But surprisingly, the author did not call her choices “schmaltzy”, instead, he reportedly sent the book to the talk show host in April, expecting some critical appreciation from her. Jonathan Franzen explained that there are two reasons behind it. Firstly, according to him it would make a good television show with the reunion of the two and secondly, it was a better idea to do a book club together. Moreover, he feels that “Freedom” is the kind of book that Oprah Winfrey loves reading. It has “some reach and social force”, that could only be implemented if the book is promoted.

When the two met on the sets, there were hardly any aura of coldness between the two, but an apparent discomfort could be perceived from the part of Jonathan Franzen. Oprah Winfrey, like always, made her guest comfortable as she addressed him as “one of the best writers in the world”. Jonathan Franzen retaliated back saying that now he has “more respect for television”.
