Nov 4, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Well known TV newsreader Jon Snow has hit out at the fans who criticized him for not wearing the emblem before Remembrance Day. The TV personality called it ‘poppy fascism’ and showed his frustration even in his Twitter account where he said that the soldiers died fighting for people’s freedom of choice. The clash broke out last week after one viewer posted a comment on Jon Snow’s blog saying that he had dishonored those who died in the war by not wearing emblem before Remembrance Sunday.
Jon Snow immediately responded to the allegations by the viewer and said that the soldiers died fighting so that people are free to make a choice about what they want to or not want to do. He also added that compelling people to wear poppies because the viewer wants them to is a case of ‘poppy fascism’ which is intolerance. He also said that he was opposed to the idea and explained that he would wear the poppy where it should be worn, that is in church.
Jon Snow, however, found support from some other bloggers and also the network. They said that asking the news presenter to wear the poppy was a rather ‘cosmetic show’. The viewer named Stan who alleged Jon Snow of the insult was told by the presenter that when he was on his bike he did not think of the thousands who died in the war. A Channel 4 spokesperson said that they do not impose a requirement to wear poppies nor was there a deliberate decision to do so.
