“Johnny Mercer: The Dream’s On Me” Aired As Centenary Celebration On TCM

Nov. 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Turner Classic Movies aired a show at 8 in the evening on the celebrated songwriter Johnny Mercer on November 4. The show was a documentary that traced the life of the great and talented man who had enriched the music industry with his creations and had left a great legacy behind him. The show entitled “The Dream’s On Me” basically is a tribute to the greatest songwriter of all times. The show tries to explain why he has become a legend and why his era is considered to be the golden age of the music industry.
Mercer had won four Oscars for best songs. Sixteen of his songs were nominated for the Academy Awards. Almost all of his songs were popular. He wrote songs for classic movies like “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”. Some of his songs are widely remembered even today, almost thirty years after his death. He died in 1976, at the age of 66. Mercer was born in Savannah, Ga. He led a life of intense depression and alcoholism. Coming from a rich background, his family lost all their money in the depression. Even when he had money and fame, Mercer was plagued by the thoughts of a woman who never belonged to him.
The show is part of the celebration of the songwriter’s centenary, that is two weeks from now. The documentary is produced by Clint Eastwood. It marked off the celebration of Mercer’s centenary on the 18th of November that would be commemorated by events that would stretch for a whole month. The show depicts archival footage from the lyricist’s life. The filmed was enriched by the presence of the likes of Tony Bennett and Barbra Streisand.
