Johnny Depp Turns 47 Today

June 9, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Johnny Depp celebrates his 47th birthday today. Depp, has more than one reason to celebrate his birthday as his latest film Alice in Wonderland, has become the 6th film to cross the $1 billion mark. He is the only actor with two films achieving this coveted milestone. His other film to earn more than a billion dollar is the 2006 release, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
Depp was born in Owensboro, Kentucky and his family moved a lot during his childhood. He lived along with his family in 20 different locations before settling in Florida.
During an interview in 1993, Depp revealed that he engaged in self harm as a child. He said that it was his way of dealing with his insecurities and the family problems. He has 13 tattoos on his body, which according to him signifies important people and events of his life.
Depp, who starred his career with a lead role in television series, 21 Jump Street, got his first important role in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984. After doing some small roles, he played the lead in Tim Burton’s 1990 film Edward Scissorhands. He gained widespread popularity for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of Caribbean film series.
In a career spanning nearly 26 years, Depp has thrice been nominated for the Oscars. Apart fromOscars he has been nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards four times and Golden Globe Awards eight times too. His role in Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street fetched him the Best Actor Award from the Golden Globes in 2007.
