Johnny DeppThe Johnny Depp starer “Public Enemies” released on July 1 and it is already billed to be a top grosser this year. The center of attraction of the film is the character of John Dillinger, who in real life was a legendary bank robber during the depression era. The name of the movie comes from this criminal’s FBI details that counted him as “Public Enemy Number One”. Dillinger was a fascinating character from the early 20th century who almost came to life through Bryan Burrough’s book.

Johnny Depp, who took up the role of Dillinger, tried to portray him as a public hero as it used to be in the 1930s when Americans actually rooted for the real Dillinger. He was known to rob the banks but he spared the money of the people belonging to the working class. Johnny Depp felt quite thrilled doing the character and added, “I think he was just not unlike any Southern gentleman in a way, the fact that he made a relatively grave error in his youth, in a fit of drunken ignorance, which I know- I remember a few of those- and that sent him to prison for 10 years.”

Since the film’s director Michael Mann’ specialises in minute detailing, the movie probes into real situations rather just action sequences. Besides having significant actors like Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard, the movie also shows a different picture of Chicago. The director has shot in Dillinger’s ‘old hang outs’, to try to take the viewers back to the 1930s and give them the real feel of things.
