John Lennon’s ‘A Day In The Life’ Lyrics To Sell At Auction
April 30th, 2010 - 7:45 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonApr 30 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The handwritten copy of the lyrics to John Lennon’s “A Day In The Life”, penned by the man himself, are expected to fetch anywhere from $500,000 to $700,000 at least when the paper goes up for auction this summer. The lyrics, written on both sides by Lennon, and corrected or amended in red ink will be sold at auction by Sotheby’s in New York on June 18th. They are being sold by an unidentified American collector who purchased the lyrics at Sotheby’s in 1992 for 93,000 dollars. The seller plans to use the profits to buy a vineyard.
The song was rated as the 26th greatest hit of all time by ‘Rolling Stone Magazine’ and is the final song from the 1967 Beatle’s classic album ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. According to Sotheby’s, the song ‘A Day In The Life’ was “the revolutionary song which transformed the Beatles from pop icons to artists.” The album was at the top of the British charts for 27 weeks, and 15 of those weeks were at the number one spot in the American Billboard 200.
The Assistant Editor of Rolling Stones magazine feels that the song and album deserves the high praises since it was the last album that the Beatles worked on as a group collectively. “That album was the beginning of the album era,” Greene said. “It was the big bang of albums. This was the first concept album. All the songs go together to tell a story, and it’s inspired every musician.”
